TotalEnergies, in collaboration with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) and XRG under the leadership of ADNOC, has decided to advance the development of the Absheron gas and condensate field in the Caspian Sea. This project aims to increase total production to 6 billion cubic meters of gas and 47,000 barrels of condensate per day.
Details of the Absheron Field Development
With the approval of the final investment decision (FID) for the full development of the Absheron field, TotalEnergies (35% stake, as operator) and its partners, SOCAR (35%) and XRG (30%), anticipate that this project will be operational by 2029, increasing the total field production to 6 billion cubic meters of gas and 47,000 barrels of condensate per day.

The first phase of this field's development began in 2023, with a production capacity of 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas and 12,000 barrels of condensate per day. The Absheron field is located 100 kilometers southeast of Baku and has approximately 140 billion cubic meters of recoverable gas reserves.
Economic Implications and Energy Security
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, stated: "We are pleased to announce the launch of the full development of the Absheron field, a project that harnesses the full production potential of one of the largest gas discoveries in the Caspian Sea." This project aligns with TotalEnergies' strategy as a low-cost and low-emission project that provides additional gas supply to domestic and international markets and supports regional energy security.
According to the operator, the produced gas will be supplied to the domestic market and exported to Turkey through existing gas infrastructure, which will help strengthen regional energy security.
TotalEnergies emphasizes that gas will be produced through four subsea wells and transported to shore via a subsea pipeline. This pipeline will be equipped with advanced automation solutions and processed at a new shore facility that is fully electric and designed to minimize energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The GHG emission intensity (Scope 1 & 2) of this project will be less than 4 kilograms of CO2e per barrel of oil equivalent (boe).
This project complements XRG's existing investments in the Southern Gas Corridor, linking major Caspian Sea resources with established export routes and the growing demand of related customers. This strategic pipeline network, spanning 3,500 kilometers, connects Azerbaijan to Turkey, Southern Europe, and over 15 European countries.
Mohammed Al-Ayani, Head of International Gas at XRG, said: "Together with SOCAR and TotalEnergies, we are investing in world-class resources and infrastructure that support energy security, create economic value, and drive sustainable growth." This decision also reflects the strong and enduring relations between the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan and our shared aspiration to fully harness the potential of the Caspian Sea region in the coming decades.
