TotalEnergies and its local partner, AMNI, have decided to advance the development of the Ima gas field off the coast of Nigeria. This project is designed as a low-emission gas scheme and will meet approximately one-third of the feedstock required for Nigeria's new liquefied natural gas (LNG) project.
Details of the Ima Gas Field
TotalEnergies and AMNI have made the final investment decision (FID) for the development of the Ima gas field, which is located between the offshore licenses OML 112 and 117. The Ima gas field is situated in shallow waters near Bonny Island and will be developed with a single platform. This platform will be connected to the Nigeria LNG (NLNG) facilities via a 22-kilometer pipeline. The partners in these facilities include Shell (25.6%), NNPC (49%), TotalEnergies (15%), and Eni (10.4%).
Timeline and Production Capacity
Production from the Ima field is expected to start in 2028 and reach a sustainable production level of 350 million cubic feet per day, equivalent to over 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. This project is designed with low costs and low emissions, including a simple platform design, power supply from the shore, no gas flaring, and continuous monitoring of methane.
TotalEnergies, as the operator of this project with a 40% stake, and AMNI, with the remaining 60% stake as its partner, are developing the Ima field. This field is expected to supply about one-third of the gas needed for Nigeria's liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, which will increase the facility's capacity from 22 million tons per year to 30 million tons per year.
Nicolas Terraz, President of Exploration and Production at TotalEnergies, stated, "We are pleased to announce the final investment decision for the Ima gas project, which is a new sign of progress in our integrated gas strategy in Nigeria." He added that this project will help develop the local community and is expected that about 60% of the workforce will come from host communities.
