The Indian Embassy in Oman confirmed that out of the 19 Indian sailors on board, one has lost his life. A spokesperson for the embassy said, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of this Indian sailor and express our condolences to the grieving family." The embassy is also in contact with Omani officials and the shipping recruitment agency.
Impact of the Attack and Security Situation
Frequent attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz have raised serious concerns about maritime security. In recent days, two other incidents have also been reported in the area, resulting in the injury of two other crew members. As commercial traffic has sharply decreased, only two commercial vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, a significant drop from 125 large commercial ships before tensions began on February 28.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) warned that commercial ships and civilian sailors are increasingly becoming involved in regional conflicts, and since the onset of tensions, 80 attacks in and around the Strait of Hormuz have been confirmed, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 sailors.
This attack on the oil tanker Cape Dao comes as Donald Trump, the President of the United States, is attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York, and diplomatic efforts to resolve these conflicts are underway. Trump has also warned that if an agreement is not reached, the United States may escalate military action.
