Rescue Operations and Challenges
The rescue operations are ongoing under the supervision of the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS). I Putu Sudayana, one of the agency's officials, expressed hope that the weather conditions on Monday would favor the rescue operations so that more victims could be rescued from inside the ship. However, adverse weather conditions and strong currents have made it difficult for rescuers.
On Sunday, rescue teams managed to recover another body from inside the ship's hull, and three other bodies had been found earlier. To date, 108 of the ship's passengers have been rescued and safely brought to shore.
Continuation of Rescue Operations
Due to the high number of missing persons, the National Search and Rescue Agency has decided to extend the recovery operations for another week. The rescue and recovery operations for the ship are expected to require more time.
The use of a robotic underwater device to assist in guiding divers inside the ship has been included in the operational plan for Monday. This device will be able to provide accurate information to divers in complex underwater conditions and help expedite the rescue operations.
