The sale of marine cargo by Rio Tinto has recently expanded and includes two tankers built in 2013 named RTM Dias and RTM Flinders. These two tankers were sold for a total of $42.8 million.

Sale Details

The two tankers RTM Dias and RTM Flinders, each weighing 89,892 deadweight tons (dwt), were sold for $21.4 million each. These vessels were built by Namura in Japan and are part of Rio Tinto's shipping operations. RTM Dias was delivered to Rio Tinto in 2013, while the current registration of RTM Flinders is under the ownership of Rio Tinto Asia and managed by Rio Tinto Shipping.

Background and Dimensions of the Sale

This transaction is separate from previous sales of the Newcastlemax fleet tracked in 2026. Earlier this year, Rio Tinto sold the last two ships from its fleet of eight Newcastlemax vessels, in which Yasa Shipping purchased the RTM Drake and RTM Tasman. This action concluded the sales program in which six other vessels of 205,000 tons deadweight were also removed from this miner's fleet.

According to the latest maritime statistics from Rio Tinto, this mining giant operates over 230 chartered vessels and transports over 300 million tons of cargo in approximately 2,700 maritime trips per year. This high volume of cargo movement reflects the extensive scope of the company's shipping operations and will somehow impact the global oil market.
