The Russian cargo ship Yuri Arshenevsky (IMO 8406705), known for transporting weaponry, has recently departed from Tobruk port in Libya towards Turkey. After separating from a convoy under naval protection, the ship has headed north towards the Dardanelles Strait and the Black Sea.

Details of the ship's movement

While traveling with the sanctioned cargo ship Anastasia (IMO 9349291), Yuri Arshenevsky left the Baltic Sea naval base in Kaliningrad, Russia, accompanied by a Ropucha-class warship named Alexander Shabalin (L110). After passing through the Strait of Gibraltar and reaching Tobruk port, they loaded cargo including Ural trucks and armored vehicles. Social media images show military equipment being transported out of the port under cover.

Possible implications of the ship's movement

Yuri Arshenevsky's northward movement from the Dardanelles and approach to the Bosphorus puts it at risk of similar attacks that Ukraine previously conducted on Russian-flagged ships in the Black Sea. Currently, the ship is nearing the Bosphorus Strait and appears to have altered its course towards a port or anchorage in Tuzla. Meanwhile, if the ship continues its journey, it will be susceptible to Ukrainian attacks, especially as it is associated with the transport of weapons and military equipment.

These developments occur as Tobruk port is under the control of military commander Khalifa Haftar, while the Turkish government supports the opposing side in the Libyan civil war, namely the government based in Tripoli. In this context, the movements of cargo ships carrying military cargo could escalate tensions in the region.
