The Iranian economy has faced serious challenges in recent years, including extensive sanctions, trade restrictions, and external pressures. However, economic activities in the country have not completely halted, and production, distribution, trade, and service networks continue to operate. Abdolnaser Hemmati, the Governor of the Central Bank, referred to the resilience of the Iranian economy at the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and dismissed claims of the country's economic collapse as mere illusions.

Factors Contributing to the Resilience of the Iranian Economy

One of the most important factors contributing to the resilience of the Iranian economy is its diverse production and service sectors. Although oil and gas play a significant role in providing foreign exchange revenues and financial resources for the country, the entire Iranian economy is not limited to these sectors. Agriculture, food industries, consumer goods production, metal industries, petrochemicals, and services form a collection of economic activities that each meet part of domestic needs. This diversity has ensured that limitations in one sector do not mean a halt to all economic activities.

The existence of a large domestic market is also considered a significant advantage. Millions of consumers, thousands of production units, and a wide network of small and large enterprises shape domestic demand and supply. Many of these activities can continue even under challenging foreign trade conditions, although they may face higher costs.

Experience with Sanctions and Adaptation of Enterprises

The long experience of the Iranian economy in facing sanctions is another factor of resilience. Economic enterprises have adapted their methods for securing raw materials, obtaining parts, transferring money, and selling their products to the new conditions over the years. This experience does not mean that sanctions are ineffective; rather, it shows that part of the Iranian economy has been able to find practical solutions to external limitations. The presence of technical knowledge, skilled human resources, and accumulated operational experience in various industries plays a crucial role in this process.

The domestic market of Iran also plays an important role in maintaining economic activities. A significant portion of production units, stores, and service companies offer their products and services to domestic consumers. This feature allows the economy to continue some of its activities based on domestic demand and not solely depend on the state of foreign trade. In many industries, producers can adapt to market conditions by adjusting their product mix and changing their delivery methods.

International Monetary Fund's Forecast for the Iranian Economy

According to a recent report from the International Monetary Fund in October 2026, it is predicted that the Iranian economy will face a contraction of 7.6 percent in 2026 but will experience a positive growth of 3.6 percent in 2027. It is also expected that the inflation rate will decrease from 78.6 percent in 2026 to 42 percent in 2027. The Fund also anticipates that the current account deficit, equivalent to 1.2 percent of GDP this year, will turn into a surplus of 1.2 percent next year.

Overall, what has prevented a widespread halt in the Iranian economy so far is a combination of the capacity of the domestic market, the diversity of economic activities, the adaptability of enterprises, and the continuity of basic services. These factors indicate that the Iranian economy, despite external pressures, has the capacity to continue its activities and can gradually return to growth.
