Qatar, using the Al-Rayan tanker, one of its oldest tankers, successfully resumed liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to China on September 10. This action took place under circumstances where the country's gas exports had been severely impacted by missile attacks.

Recent Developments in Qatar's Gas Exports

Six months have passed since the start of a war that has heightened tensions in the Gulf, and Qatar has faced numerous challenges in its gas exports. By late August, LNG shipments from the country had nearly stopped. This situation arose after an attack on one of Qatar's tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, significantly increasing pressure on the country.

Senior managers at Qatar Energy quickly sought solutions upon witnessing this crisis and decided to utilize the Al-Rayan tanker. This 29-year-old tanker, recognized as one of the oldest tankers in Qatar's fleet, secretly and without navigation equipment, moved towards the Port of Sohar in Oman under security orders from the U.S. Navy.

New Strategy and Return to the Global Market

After unloading its cargo in Oman, the Al-Rayan tanker returned to the Strait of Hormuz to load a new shipment. In the four weeks following the tanker’s first voyage, about 20 tankers carrying Qatari LNG exited the Strait of Hormuz, quickly reaching one-third of pre-war levels.

This increase in liquefied natural gas exports reflects Qatar's efforts to return to the global market and meet customer needs in Asia and Europe. Given that Qatar supplies nearly one-fifth of the world's LNG, improving the country's export situation could help alleviate pressure in the global market.

With the onset of the war and disruptions in the supply chain, all energy producers in the Gulf were forced to find new ways to deliver fuel to customers. This situation has led Qatar Energy to seek innovative solutions to maintain its position as one of the top LNG exporters.

However, attacks on Qatari tankers continue, which could lead to new challenges for the country. Qatar is expected to continue its efforts to rebuild gas exports while leveraging recent experiences to improve its strategies.
