The government of Pakistan on October 1, 2026, in collaboration with domestic producers and carriers, initiated the examination of the possibility of securing a dedicated tanker. This decision was made due to increasing challenges and rising transportation costs under current conditions. Producers have stated that they are in an unfavorable position due to existing issues in the transportation industry.

Meeting Held in Islamabad

The Minister of Maritime Affairs of Pakistan held a meeting in Islamabad to discuss the existing challenges in the transportation industry. Adidas Pakistan, one of the largest producers in the country, attended this meeting and, in collaboration with the local producer, Style Textile, and the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation, addressed the existing issues.

Producers and exporters pointed out the increasing challenges, part of which stem from disruptions caused by the US-Iran war and issues in the Red Sea. They emphasized that rerouting ships away from the Gulf region and bypassing Africa to avoid risks from the Houthis has increased transportation duration and consequently its costs.

Formation of a Working Group to Improve Transportation

The Pakistan National Shipping Corporation announced at this meeting that it is ready to lease or purchase a container tanker to facilitate the needs of exporters. However, they emphasized that it must be ensured that there is sufficient cargo volume for the commercial success of this operation.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs, along with the shipping company and exporters, agreed to form a working group to examine the necessary steps to improve transportation connectivity and access to international markets. They are also seeking other measures to reduce transportation costs and enhance connections.

Producers also intend to consult with other exporters to gain a better understanding of the challenges and potential demand for a dedicated tanker.

Earlier this year, the Karachi shipyard began work on constructing the country's first container tanker. This program, announced in 2022, involves building a vessel with a capacity of 1,100 TEU, which will be operated by the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation. Reports indicate that this vessel will be the first large commercial ship built in Pakistan since the 1980s.

The government established a special task force in 2024 to explore opportunities for expanding Pakistan's maritime economy.
