Massoud Pezeshkian, a member of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, and Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, discussed and developed economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries, especially in the energy sector, on the sidelines of the summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

New Proposals for Energy Cooperation

At this summit, Russia announced the review of several new sites in Iran for the construction of large and small nuclear power plants. This proposal could help Tehran and Moscow's energy cooperation at a new and effective level. Alexey Likhachev, the head of Rosatom, had previously announced that the company is examining new locations for the construction of nuclear power plants with various capacities in Iran.

Impact on Iran's Nuclear Power Generation

This proposal comes at a time when Iran is developing nuclear power generation, with new projects such as the construction of units 2 and 3 of the Bushehr nuclear power plant underway for the past three years. The head of Rosatom also announced that 80 employees of the company have returned to Iran and are active in the project to build two new units at the Bushehr plant.

In its seventh development plan, Iran has set increasing nuclear power generation capacity as one of its main objectives. This development could help diversify the electricity generation portfolio, ensure sustainable energy supply, and reduce the electricity imbalance in the country. Given the growing energy demand in Iran, cooperation between Iran and Russia in this area could become particularly important during critical periods.
