Macron, the President of France, emphasized the importance of his country's nuclear deterrence during an unexpected visit to a warship near Brittany, where he conducted the first sea test of the M51.3 ballistic missile. This action is part of strengthening France's military capabilities in response to increasing threats from Russia.
New Missile Tests
The test of the M51.3 ballistic missile from the submarine Le Vigilant, one of four Le Triomphant class submarines of France, was conducted as a test firing after maintenance. During the ceremony, Macron told the sailors: "To be free, you must be feared, and to be feared, you must be strong." This message clearly reflects France's determination to maintain national security and respond to nuclear threats.

Response to Russian Threats
Last month, Russia issued threats against NATO, stating that it would attack decision-making centers in Europe in the event of any conflict. These threats have led to increased attention from Macron on strengthening France's nuclear arsenal. In response to these developments, France has begun necessary updates to its missile systems to counter advancements in air defense technology.
Macron, referring to the equipping and updating of its ballistic missiles, emphasized the need to maintain France's nuclear capabilities. According to experts, Russia's investments in similar air defense systems undermine France's nuclear deterrent capability. For this reason, ArianeGroup is developing a fourth version of the M51 missile with enhanced capabilities.
