Lloyd’s Register, Shell, and GTT will focus on the development of hybrid-electric propulsion systems for LNG vessels. This project aims to respond to the increasing pressure from the industry to reduce emissions and enhance operational flexibility.

Analysis and Review of Larger Vessel Concepts

Constantinos Chaelis, Global Gas Director at Lloyd’s Register, highlighted the importance of this project and mentioned that concepts for larger vessels are being examined to understand their potential. This project will explore how hybrid-electric propulsion technology and cargo handling technology can improve the technical and operational performance of vessels from the perspective of total cost of ownership (TCO).

Development and Safety Approval of the System

The three entities are working on the development and safety approval of the hybrid propulsion system for the vessel. The focus will be on system architecture, redundancy philosophy, and battery integration. Additionally, a commercial assessment based on the total cost of ownership model will also be examined. Simultaneously, the integration of GTT NEXT1 cargo handling technology will be reviewed as part of the overall vessel concept. This project will also establish the technical requirements and guidelines necessary for hybrid propulsion in LNG vessel applications and will contribute to a greater technical understanding of this technology.

Chaelis added, "By bringing together expertise from across the LNG value chain, we are helping to develop the technical foundations that can assist in further evaluating future LNG vessel concepts."

Lloyd’s Register, which is engaged in multiple LNG-related projects, recently granted an initial approval (AiP) to GasEntec for a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) concept capable of delivering one billion cubic feet of gas per day.
