Kongsberg Maritime has signed a contract to deliver an underwater storage and docking system for a new research vessel being built by VARD for Inkfish.

Development of DUV Technology

This system is recognized as an advancement in the operations of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). It combines a dedicated AUV storage facility with underwater docking technology, allowing HUGIN AUVs to be launched, recovered, and docked below the sea surface, significantly reducing the impact of waves. This enhances operational safety and enables operators to conduct AUV missions in harsher sea conditions.

Collaboration and Future Expectations

This solution has been developed in close collaboration with KONGSBERG and is based on several years of technology development between the two companies. Inger Hovden, Senior Sales Manager for LARS systems at Kongsberg Maritime, stated: "We are proud that Inkfish and VARD have trusted us. Underwater docking provides a significant improvement in how AUV operations are conducted. By relocating docking operations below the wave zone, operators can enhance availability, safety, and operational time for research missions."

This system is specifically designed for efficient AUV fleet operations, and unlike single-vehicle container systems, this delivery is a dedicated storage solution. Kongsberg Maritime will be responsible for integrating the storage, sliding system, vehicle logistics, and a lifting crane for managing AUVs in the moonpool area and during loading from the shore.

Mart Hildem, Senior Vice President of Management at Kongsberg Maritime, added: "We see strong long-term potential in the autonomous underwater operations market. Research, military, and marine customers are increasingly seeking solutions that enhance safety, operational capability, and mission efficiency. This contract confirms Kongsberg Maritime's strong position in advanced launch and recovery systems and our commitment to developing the next generation of underwater management technologies."

This system is expected to be assembled and tested at Kongsberg Maritime's facilities in Brattvåg, Norway, close to VARD's shipbuilding operations. Delivery of this system is scheduled for the end of 2027.
