JD Vance, the Vice President of the United States, announced that the Alaska natural gas project will continue in collaboration with South Korea. These remarks come at a time when the South Korean government is conditional on the economic viability of the plan, and this situation has brought along trade threats from Donald Trump against Seoul.

Details of the Agreement and Investment

Vance said on Monday at Joint Base Andrews while on his way to Alaska that he believes this plan will ultimately be implemented. He also noted that there is still a need for agreement on some details, and the South Korean side has emphasized this issue as well. Given the high global demand for American natural gas, Vance believes that the two countries can bring this project to fruition.

South Korean Investment

Meanwhile, South Korea announced that last week it transferred $2.4 billion as the first portion of the committed investments in the bilateral trade agreement with the United States. These statements reflect Vance's efforts to maintain investment discussions amid the risk of escalating trade and security disputes between the two countries.

Washington and Seoul have spent months determining destination projects for hundreds of billions of dollars in South Korean investment commitments finalized last year under the trade agreement with the United States. Vance also pointed out that the construction of this pipeline is a serious demand from Washington and many of its Asian allies, and in addition to South Korea, Japan is also very eager for this project to be operational.

According to Bloomberg, last week Trump unveiled a $54 billion plan for liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports as the main focus of Seoul's investment commitments. However, the South Korean government has stated that it will only enter this project if economic viability is proven.

At the same time, Trump's legal status regarding the imposition of tariffs on South Korean goods remains unclear, as the U.S. Supreme Court has limited the tariff powers of the President in recent months.
