Inpex has increased its stake to strengthen its presence in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) Ichthys project. The company has entered into agreements with JERA's subsidiaries to purchase 0.735% of the Ichthys project using preemptive rights. With this move, Inpex's stake in the project will rise from 67.82% to 68.555%.
Details of the Deal and Its Conditions
The completion of the mentioned deal is subject to the fulfillment of specific conditions, including approval from Australian government regulatory bodies. The purchased shares include blocks WA-50-L and WA-51-L along with the Ichthys gas field and stakes in subsidiaries related to gas liquefaction facilities and its export. This agreement follows JERA's decision in December 2025 to sell shares to MidOcean Energy in its Australian project subsidiary, which holds a 0.735% stake in the projects.

Geographical Location and Infrastructure
The Ichthys field is located about 220 kilometers off the coast of Western Australia and 820 kilometers southwest of Darwin, covering an area of approximately 800 square kilometers at an average water depth of 250 meters. A pipeline, 890 kilometers long, transports gas and condensate from the Ichthys Central Processing Facility (CPF) to onshore processing facilities near Darwin. After initial processing at sea, gas from the Ichthys field is transferred to the main Asia-Pacific pipeline.
Earlier this year, Inpex also announced plans to add a third LNG unit to the Ichthys project in Darwin, which will be based on the growing Beetaloo production. This move demonstrates Inpex's commitment to developing gas infrastructure and increasing production in the region.
