Five commercial ships were targeted in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, including a container ship and four oil tankers. These attacks come as tensions in the region are increasingly escalating.

Details of Recent Attacks

According to new reports, four ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz were attacked, and another oil tanker was targeted by a drone near the port of Sohar in Oman. Information received from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) indicates that all these ships were damaged by unidentified projects. In one of these attacks, UKMTO confirmed that the crew of an oil tanker is safely evacuating, although the environmental impacts are still unclear.

Analysis and Dimensions of the Attacks

The recent attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz are part of a broader pattern of attacks on commercial fleets in the region. Recent reports have revealed that these attacks are no longer limited to ships passing through the strait and also include vessels anchored off the coasts of the United Arab Emirates and other parts of the Persian Gulf. This expanded pattern has raised concerns about the security of the commercial fleet and indicates ongoing pressure and surveillance of ships by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran.

Moreover, according to JMIC data, the number of ship passages in this area has significantly decreased to about 29 passages per day during the 72 hours leading up to October 10, while the historical average has been around 138 passages per day. This decline has clearly impacted the commercial and security approach in these waters and raised questions about the sustainability of any improvements in the commercial fleet.

UKMTO has also advised ships to exercise caution while passing through and to report suspicious activities, while local authorities are investigating the latest incidents and assessing damages and environmental impacts.
