The Gothenburg Ro-Ro terminal has been significantly strengthened with major investments in recent years. These changes include the development of terminal areas, new rail connections, and the modernization of the loading platform. According to statistics, in the first half of 2026, the volume of cargo handled by this terminal increased by five percent compared to the same period last year.
Development of Terminal Infrastructure
The Gothenburg Ro-Ro terminal is one of the key terminals in the Gothenburg port for wheeled cargo, covering regular routes to major transport hubs in the UK and Central Europe. The handled cargo includes a wide range of goods, including food, forestry products, steel, and high-value electronics. Over the past three years, this terminal has undergone extensive changes. These changes include the creation of larger terminal areas, additional rail lines, and improved transport facilities to accommodate larger vessels.
Impacts on Domestic Transportation in Europe
Recent developments at the Gothenburg Ro-Ro terminal have coincided with an increased interest in intra-European maritime transport. Geopolitical uncertainties, tariff disputes, and global supply chain disruptions have led companies to seek regional and predictable transport solutions with frequent connections to major transport hubs in Europe. Ground transportation in some areas of Europe is also facing capacity shortages and frequent disruptions. Ro-Ro transport and short-sea shipping can alleviate pressure on busy domestic transport corridors and contribute to more sustainable and resilient logistics flows.
Furthermore, the Gothenburg Ro-Ro terminal opened 144,000 square meters of new terminal space in 2024, marking the largest expansion of this port since the establishment of the Ro-Ro terminal in the late 1970s. Additionally, in 2023, this terminal added 65,000 square meters of terminal space and seven new rail lines to its operations by acquiring the Arken intermodal terminal, enabling direct handling of trailers between trains and ships.
Given these developments, the Gothenburg Ro-Ro terminal is well-equipped for continued growth. The terminal managers believe that these improvements reflect ongoing efforts to increase capacity and operational quality. With the growth in cargo volume, this trend is expected to continue, and the terminal will meet the needs of the Swedish industry.
