Saronic Technologies has commenced construction of the $3 billion Port Alpha shipbuilding port in Brownsville, Texas. This project is considered one of the largest new shipbuilding projects in the United States in recent decades.

Details of the Port Alpha Project

Saronic selected Brownsville in July for the construction of Port Alpha and presented plans to create a new shipyard capable of building autonomous and crewed ships for military and commercial customers. The initial site of this project spans 835 acres, with options to expand it to nearly 4,400 acres. Operations at the port are expected to begin in 2028.

The company has announced that Port Alpha will be inaugurated with an annual shipbuilding capacity of 150,000 gross tons, which they claim is more than double the current capacity of commercial shipbuilding in the United States. Initially, the port will be able to build ships up to 850 feet long, and with future expansions, it will also be able to construct ships longer than 1,200 feet.

Phase One and Production Capacities

Phase one of this project includes 1.2 million square feet of enclosed production space, which will be spread across eight to ten buildings. The port will feature over 2,500 feet of deep-water dock and two to four positions for final assembly of ships. Saronic has also planned for annual steel processing capacity to reach about 75,000 tons.

Dino Mavrookas, co-founder and CEO of Saronic, stated that American shipbuilding needs to be restructured for future challenges and that this facility is designed with modular design and increased production capacity for both autonomous and conventional ships.

Military Business Development and Job Creation

Port Alpha is being developed as Saronic's military business is rapidly expanding. The company plans to produce LCU 1700 landing craft for the U.S. Navy at the Brownsville port. This selection is alongside two other shipyards for prototype agreements related to the new generation of Navy landing ships. The total commitments for these initial awards are estimated at approximately $280.5 million.

This project is also being announced alongside the news that Saronic has received a Navy production award for the 180-foot autonomous ship Marauder. This vessel has successfully completed over 140 test scenarios at sea in eight days of continuous evaluation.

According to estimates from Saronic and Texas officials, this project could create up to 10,000 direct jobs, including welders, machinists, naval architects, software engineers, and robotics specialists. The potential economic impact of this project in Texas is estimated at $264.5 billion.

With the commencement of this project, Saronic is moving towards the production of large ships and the construction of conventional military vessels, with Port Alpha designed as a base for this expansion.
