Cadeler has signed an agreement with Vattenfall as part of its expansion of services in renewable energy, aimed at developing new methods for maintaining offshore wind turbines. This collaboration will particularly focus on the replacement of key turbine components.

Development of Wind Turbine Maintenance Methods

The agreement includes the replacement of heavy components such as blades, nacelles, and gearboxes. In this regard, the two companies will explore how to combine specialized vessels, equipment, service procedures, and long-term maintenance planning to minimize downtime and operational execution.

Challenges in the Wind Energy Industry

This agreement comes as the European offshore wind fleet has transitioned to long-term operations. Over time, as turbines age, operators will face the need for more major repairs, requiring costly campaigns and periods of lost electricity production each time.

Nexra and Vattenfall have announced that they will explore solutions applicable across various turbine platforms and scalable across multiple wind farms. Safety, maintenance predictability, and asset availability will be among the main focuses of this collaboration.

According to Jacob Christian Gregersen, Chief Growth Officer of Cadeler, "The offshore wind energy industry has entered a new phase, and its maintenance needs are becoming increasingly complex. This collaboration provides us with an opportunity to explore new methods for replacing major components."

The agreement does not include details regarding specific contracts, specific vessels, or investment commitments. Cadeler is expanding Nexra's maintenance activities, and its vessels are currently conducting maintenance campaigns in Europe and Asia.

Furthermore, the head of offshore wind energy production at Vattenfall stated that "every major component replacement comes with costs, complexity, and significant production losses. We are looking for smart methods that support safe and reliable operations, improve the long-term performance of assets, and reduce lifecycle costs."
