The Yanbu oil port (Yanbu) in Saudi Arabia experienced a fire on October 1, 2026, due to a collision with an unknown project. This port, recognized as one of Saudi Arabia's main oil export terminals in the Red Sea, temporarily halted its loading operations due to this incident.

Details of the Incident and Its Impact on Port Operations

According to security sources, the unknown project landed near a tank farm at the Yanbu port, causing the fire. Images released from the scene show the fire that has erupted in the surrounding area. The security consulting firm Vanguard Tech has confirmed that this project landed within the port's vicinity and led to the fire.

Loading operations at this port were temporarily halted due to this attack. Yanbu port is recognized as a vulnerable point in the oil supply chain to Europe, and this incident may have serious implications for oil supply in global markets.

History of Attacks and Defensive Measures

This attack comes as Saudi forces successfully intercepted several drone and missile attacks in Jazan and the city of Khamis Mushait on the same day. The attack on Yanbu port followed a previous attack on the East-West pipeline, which had halted loading activities at this port for 17 days. This pipeline transports crude oil from Saudi oil fields on the Gulf coast to Yanbu port.

Recent attacks on Yanbu port have been attributed to Iraqi militia groups, but no group has officially claimed responsibility for this attack. However, previous attacks on this port have been linked to Houthi rebels from Yemen, who are currently at war with the Saudi-backed and internationally recognized government in Yemen.

In response to these events, French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that the country intends to protect Yanbu port by deploying military equipment and air defense systems, but emphasized that this action does not signify France's entry into the Yemen conflict.
