ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) has granted an Approval in Principle (AIP) for an ammonia fuel supply vessel with a capacity of 22,000 cubic meters to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE). This approval is considered a significant step in the development of ammonia fuel infrastructure for ships.
Emphasis on Safety and Fuel Flexibility
Gert B. Burton, Senior Vice President of Global Engineering at ABS, stated: "Fuel supply infrastructure is a critical step for any marine fuel and must be implemented with safe design from the outset. This approval reflects the industry's need for fuel flexibility while emphasizing the safety of ammonia fuel supply." This approval will assist HD HHI and HD KSOE in advancing technologies that contribute to fuel flexibility development.
Growth in Demand for Ammonia Fuel Supply Vessels
With the rapid emergence of ammonia as a low-carbon alternative fuel, demand for ammonia fuel supply vessels is expected to rise with the increasing adoption of ammonia-fueled ships. Ryu Hong-Ryeol, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of HD HHI, highlighted the importance of this approval, stating: "This approval marks a significant milestone in the commercialization of ammonia fuel supply vessels."
ABS and the HD Hyundai group have collaborated on various projects, including approvals for ammonia transportation and supply systems by HD KSOE and preliminary reviews for the machinery layout of HD HHI in the engine room. These collaborations demonstrate a shared commitment to advancing new technologies in the maritime industry.
Given the growing need for clean and low-carbon fuels, the development of ammonia fuel supply vessels could play a key role in reducing the environmental impacts of the maritime transport sector. These vessels will help shipping companies meet new environmental standards while continuing to address the future needs of the industry.
